Family-Owned & Operated Mouton Insurance Brokerage Inc. Helps Cover Assets for US and International Businesses

In 2002, Carla Dickens switched careers from advertising to working in the insurance industry alongside her father, Edward Mouton, and mother, Adwoa Mouton. Mr. Mouton founded Mouton Insurance Brokerage, an independent insurance agency in Washington DC in 1996 with the primary goal of providing quality and affordable insurance for intercity residents, small businesses, and not-for-profit entities.

“I decided to learn about the industry through his (Mr. Mouton’s) eyes. Do things exactly as he did it,” said Carla. “Insurance is very detailed and specific and I didn’t want to make any mistakes.”

Carla realized that working long hours for a family could be more rewarding than working long hours for a corporation. According to Carla, “There’s a sense of building with family, and having a positive impact on our community and family history. They’ve always been an inspiration to me in business and personal life decisions. We were all encouraged to always do our best, have good work ethic, have integrity in business and personal matters, and always have a plan combined with execution.”

Mr. Mouton is also an active member of the community. He is a founding member of the Washington Area Minority Insurance Agents, a former Board Member of the National African American Insurance Association (NAAIA), and a member of the Metropolitan Washington Association of Independent Agents. He recently announced his retirement from the agency after serving the DC business community for over 30 years. Carla is proud to succeed him as Principal of the agency in late summer 2023.

A minority-owned and family-operated business, Mouton Insurance offers a wide range of insurance services for commercial businesses, non-profit organizations, and other industries including Technology, Professional Services, Educational entities, and International organizations.

As Carla continues to build the legacy of Mouton Insurance, she is ready to take on the challenges that come with the ever-changing landscape of running a business. She experienced the challenges the pandemic caused and continues to ensure that she and the agents continue to service existing clients while building new relationships as a fundamental part of day-to-day operations. All agents are updated on industry trends to consult and advise insureds on ways to protect their largest assets. They’ve developed national and international resources with standard carriers to meet the insurance requirements and obligations of local, national, and international businesses. Many of their clients have been with the agency for 20+ years.

“We set ourselves apart from the ordinary brokerage agency by providing premier service to our clients,” added Carla. “Our responsiveness is a high priority for questions and emergencies. We build lasting relationships through servicing and we’ve often been a resource for business connections.”

Mouton Insurance is also a member of the DC Chamber of Commerce, and their active membership complements the Chamber’s work with international businesses, especially as government and private contracts begin to require more insurance for certain types of industries and projects.

“Through the Chamber, we’re making sure businesses can rest well knowing their most important assets are covered while connecting with communities in the US and abroad,” said Carla. “We also leverage the networking opportunities to meet and speak with other businesses and tap into how we can assist one another. It’s been a great way to develop business relationships, and I encourage small businesses to be a part of a larger community.”
