The DC Chamber Supports Mayor Bowser’s Affordable Housing Legislation

Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced legislation to reform and strengthen DC’s housing laws. The Rebalancing Expectations for Neighbors, Tenants, and Landlords Act (RENTAL Act) seeks to accomplish two critical goals: to protect the District’s existing affordable housing, and to spur more housing production. The District has been a national leader in affordable housing. But that achievement is now threatened by COVID-era changes that impede sustainable, affordable housing here.

The Rental Act tackles these challenges with comprehensive reforms that will stabilize the existing market and pave the way for more affordable housing while maintaining protections for low-income tenants. The DC Chamber believes that affordable housing is a key pillar for sustainable economic growth in our city. We commend the Mayor for her leadership on this critical issue, and we urge the DC Council to hold a hearing in March 2025 on the bill.

Home Rule and Prosperity: Why The DC Chamber of Commerce and Business Leaders Must Take a Stand
