As a key partner of the District, Singapore has been chosen due to its strong interest in strengthening the trade relationship between the country and the city by way of business-to-business matchmaking opportunities, its large pattern of foreign direct investment into the US, and its interest of further expansion into DC. In 2019, Singapore contributed $60.1 billion in total FDI stock to the US. In 2018, US affiliates of majority Singaporean-owned firms employed 39,300 US workers and invested $475 million in innovative R&D. In the same year, exports by US affiliates of majority Singaporean-owned firms valued at $1.4 billion.
